Preparing your child for starting school

Starting school is a HUGE transition for your child and this may even be the first time your child has been away from you for long periods of time. Here at the Roebuck we support and encourage children to become independent learners and thinkers, who persevere and "have a go".

Here are ways you can support their independence and also support them for the transition into school...

  • Bed time routine- Having a set bed time routine every night; your child being away from a technological device at least an hour before bed time and sharing a story before sleeping will ensure your child wakes the next day after a good sleep ready for the day and new adventures in school.
  • Dressing and undressing themselves including coats, zips, buttons and velcro shoes
  • Helping with chores either cleaning their rooms, tiding away toys and helping lay the table etc.
  • Lots of stories and communication "talk" time together.
  • Using good manners.
  • Using the toilet and washing hands independently (unless a medical condition)
  • Being able to use a knife and fork and to cut with scissors.

Here at Roebuck we enjoy close links with parents as we really do feel this supports your child holistically. If you have any concerns or would like any advice please talk to a member of staff and we would be very happy to help.

We will also be sharing with you your child's learning and information on Class Dojo and also on Evidence me throughout the year.
