Birch 2019 - 2020
Welcome to Birch Class!
We hope you all had a lovely break for half term and are looking forward to a busy and exciting run up to Christmas. We are working hard in Birch class and all children are showing a mature, ready, respectful and responsible attitude to their learning
P.E. lessons will take place on a Tuesday afternoon, but please ensure children have a P.E. kit in a named bag in school at all times. If you are unable to provide black shorts, a red t-shirt and black pumps for your child, please speak to us as we may be able to help you with this.
Spellings will be sent home on Fridays and will be tested on the Thursday of the following week. Please help your child to learn their spellings – if they find it difficult to learn all of them please encourage them to learn as many as they can.
We also expect an item off the topic homework grid to be completed each week. Please send these in with your child as and when they are completed so we can showcase their hard work in our classroom. This is a chance for your child to showcase their individual talents so please encourage them to take pride in their work and be as adventurous as they like.
Children will also bring home 1 piece of Maths homework each week. This will be sent home on a Friday and needs to be returned by the following Wednesday. This will be related to the work they have completed during the week and is a good chance for you to find out more about what your child has been learning.
In addition, please encourage your child to read for 10 minutes per night (please sign and return their book as we are keeping a record) and practise times tables. Children have all brought home logins for our Times Tables Rockstars subscription. Please encourage them to use this at home as often as possible. They have all really enjoyed working on this in school.
Our topic this half term is Food Glorious Food. In this topic we will learn about where our food comes from. We will use ordnance survey maps and grid references to find locations in the UK, map the journeys of imported foods and discuss the merits of buying locally. In DT we will be researching and making traditional Romanian foods for a Christmas celebration. Our Science topic will focus on reversible and irreversible changes, including investigations into which materials will dissolve or melt and the changes that occur when different materials are mixed.
We are encouraging children to bring in a water bottle from home which they can keep in class and access at times during the day. Toast is available every morning break time at a cost of 20p per slice per day. Children can also bring a snack of fruit or a cereal bar.
Miss Reay has now finished for maternity leave and we would like to wish her all the very best. We are looking forward to meeting her new bundle of joy in the near future! In her absence, we are very excited to welcome Mrs Connors who has worked with many of the children before and knows them well.
If you have any further questions, or need to contact us for any reason, we are available any night after school and you can also telephone or email us:
Many thanks for your support.
