Birch 2019 - 2020
Welcome to Birch Class!
We hope you all had a lovely Summer break and are looking forward to a busy new school year.
Brilliant Birch have had a tremendous start to the year and have been setting a great example to the younger children. Keep it up Team Birch!
P.E. lessons will take place on a Tuesday afternoon, but please ensure children have a P.E. kit in a named bag in school at all times. If you are unable to provide black shorts, a red t-shirt and black pumps for your child, please speak to us as we may be able to help you with this.
Spellings will be sent home on Fridays and will be tested on the Thursday of the following week. Please help your child to learn their spellings – if they find it difficult to learn all of them please encourage them to learn as many as they can.
We also expect an item off the topic homework grid to be completed each week. Please send these in with your child as and when they are completed so we can showcase their hard work in our classroom. This is a chance for your child to showcase their individual talents so please encourage them to take pride in their work and be as adventurous as they like.
Children will also bring home 1 piece of Maths homework each week. This will be sent home on a Friday and needs to be returned by the following Wednesday. This will be related to the work they have completed during the week and is a good chance for you to find out more about what your child has been learning.
In addition, please encourage your child to read for 10 minutes per night (please sign and return their book as we are keeping a record) and practise times tables. Children have all brought home logins for our Times Tables Rockstars subscription. Please encourage them to use this at home as often as possible. They have all really enjoyed working on this in school.
Our topic this half term is A Kingdom United'. In this topic we will learn about the geography of the United Kingdom including the countries and counties it contains. We will also do a case study on a UK country of the children’s choosing and investigate local geographical issues. For our music lessons we will be learning the national anthem ‘God save the Queen.’ Our history topic is the Anglo-Saxons and we will be finding out more about how they shaped the United Kingdom as we know it by studying historical information found at Sutton Hoo.
We are encouraging children to bring in a water bottle from home which they can keep in class and access at times during the day. Toast is available every morning break time at a cost of 20p per slice per day. Children can also bring a snack of fruit or a cereal bar.
If you have any further questions, or need to contact us for any reason, we are available any night after school and you can also telephone or email us:
Many thanks for your support.
